APPEARANCE | For his age, Ryou stands at a slightly above average height and is of average weight. His body, while not very muscular in appearance, is solid - it's not particularly easy to knock him over without his consent. His skin is on the lighter side, venturing towards ivory but has a fair but of colour in it. His cheeks often take a pink tinge to them when he fights or just works hard. His eyes and hair are both the same shade of very bright red, which can be surprising to people who have never seen his odd appearance before. His looks are very deceiving, as he looks very innocent and cute. He can get a bit worked up when he gets teased about his looks. When on missions Ryou wears a very generic, muted outfit that consists of a pair of black shoes, black pants and a white t-shirt covered by a black vest. He has his holster strapped to his left leg, and his Otogakure forehead protector is strapped to his leg just above his holster.

PERSONALITY | Ryou is a person that hasn't let his past or the circumstances of his life completely change his attitude and his outlook on life. Despite being constantly locked up, constantly chained down, he remains optimistic and believes that someday he will be free. He is a very intelligent boy, knowing that his only way to stay alive and to perhaps someday achieve his dreams is to keep his mouth shut and do as he says. He has developed an obedient personality, being very used to being commanded about and generally does not question the orders that he is given, not being able to refuse them without putting his life in jeopardy. He is very thoughtful and reflective, which is a surprising trait for a teenage boy. While he is a shinobi of Otogakure he feels no loyalties to it, or to anyone in it, as he has no personal connections to a soul within the village and his nature has not let himself feel a blind allegiance to them. He simply does what he does to stay alive.

To most people who meet him though, he seems like an innocent, sweet boy. He is soft-spoken, not letting anger get the best of him unless he is in a fight. He has a lot of self-control and much practice of keeping his emotions in check. He is quite lonely though and has much anger and stress bottled up inside, just waiting to burst out. If he were hit with the right trigger, things could go south for him. If he were to actually develop a relationship with someone though, it would be found that he is very protective as, due to his limited connections with people, he doesn't want to lose anyone that he draws close to him in his life.

Ryou has very few memories of his young life. He doesn't remember his parents, the home that he was born in, if he has any brothers or sisters, or even if any of his family might still be alive. Whenever he asked as a young, curious child, all questions had been shot down - painfully. All that he knows is that he has been in the village of Sound, Otogakure no Sato, and everything else is just a haze.

An unpleasant, terrifying haze.

The first memory Ryou can remember - that often plagues him in his dreams - is of being young, maybe four or five. He was sitting in a very dim room, swinging his legs down on a chair. He was alone, sitting in a room but nothing but a hard bed. He was tapping his feet on the ground, entertaining himself in this fashion. He looked up and the door opened, revealing a tall, dark man wearing a navy blue uniform, holding a small briefcase. He spoke to Ryou in a gentle voice, but Ryou remembers shaking uncontrollably when the man approached him. He readied a needle and poked the syringe in the boys arm, draining its contents into his vein. The man left, and Ryou slid into unconsciousness.

He has a few more memories like this, in different stages of his young life. He doesn't talk about it to anyone, and tries his best not to think about it. He knows now that the less he talks about it, the less careful people will be about protecting the secrets... and the more likely it will be that Ryou will eventually figure out what happened to him... and if he has family anywhere.

Ryou's life as he knows it started when he was 8. He began to live life in a laboratory, constantly being observed, tested. There were scientists who were curious as to how far they could push the limits of his body; how far could he go without dying? That was their question, and they tested it using flames. They would immobilize him, usually tying him with some sort of metal confines, and begin to test his body's reaction to flame. They began small - they would dip his hand into a pit of fire and force him to stay there until the skin was burnt off his body and he passed out from the pain.

It continued on in a cycle like this. They would push him to the very edge and then use medical ninjutsu to heal his skin, to pull him back. And each time they did it, the skin grew back stronger, more reinforced by chakra. It began with his right hand, then both hands, then his arms, chest, legs. Last of all was his face. They burnt the skin clean off every part of his body multiple times, forcing it to grow back thicker, and more reinforced. They wished to create a boy impenetrable to fire.

As the days wore on, and turned into months, his tolerance for pain began to grow. Being burnt didn't hurt, and touching a flame didn't burn his skin like it did most people. Because of the frequency he had inhaled smoke, it no longer bothered his lungs like it used to. While they were unable to make him completely impenetrable to fire, they continued to break him until his skin grew back so thick and so packed with chakra that he has an astounding resistance to flames, to the point where he can take a hit from lower-level Katon ninjutsu directly and feel little to no pain, and have little to no burning.

Not too long later, Ryou was thrust into training. They had upped his pain tolerance and reinforced his body, so now it was time to train him to be the solider that they needed him to be. His training began from the ground up - first, figuring out where his strengths and weaknesses lied. It was there that he learned for his strengths in genjutsu. He discovered this gift and worked to create his own unique genjutsu that would be more difficult to evade than classic genjutsu. They also trained his body, and his mind, with a gold to mold him into an obedient and efficient shinobi that can kill on command. This didn't work quite as well as they would have liked, but he is very good at pretending.

He is now a member of Squad Two, unsure where his loyalties lie and what it is that he is meant to do.
